Open floor plans with double-height ceilings are spectacular but can feel unresolved without materials that introduce weight and texture. Aspen’s architectural identity has never been entirely comfortable with minimalism. The ski town’s history is layered and occasionally contradictory, ranging from Victorian-era mining buildings to mid-century modernism brought in by the Aspen Institute’s early cultural ambitions, to the later wave of trophy architecture that followed the resort’s international rise. Through all of that, natural materials have remained a constant.

This is partly practical. The climate demands materials that can handle temperature extremes, heavy snow loads, and the particular kind of exposure that comes with sitting at elevation in the Rockies. Wood has always answered that call. The prevalence of timber in Aspen’s interiors goes beyond durability, though. There is a cultural expectation at work, a shared understanding that the mountains require a certain honesty from the materials used inside homes that look out at them. Interior designers working in the market speak to this frequently. The tendency toward warmth and texture in mountain homes is not a trend that rises and falls with the seasons. It is a baseline assumption about what these spaces owe their surroundings.

For Whitaker, the relationship between timber and her home was not merely aesthetic.

“When you look outside the house, you see forests and mountains,” she says. “Bringing timber into the structure of the home feels like an extension of that environment. It felt less like decorating and more like finishing something that was already started by what’s outside the windows.”

The Broader Return of Wood

Whitaker’s instinct aligns with a shift that designers across the country have been tracking for several years. Wood as a decorative and architectural element fell out of fashion in the late twentieth century along with a broader rejection of what critics called the dated heaviness of traditional interiors. It is now moving back to the center of design conversation in a significant way, and the reasons are worth understanding.

The revival is not simple nostalgia. Contemporary applications of wood in interiors tend to favor natural grain over heavy stain, architectural scale over ornamental detail, and integration with other materials rather than domination of the space. The goal is warmth, not weight. The knotty pine walls and dark veneer paneling of an earlier era are not what designers are reaching for. What they are reaching for is something closer to what Whitaker found in her great room: a material that changes the atmosphere of a space without calling attention to itself.

A reaction against the stark, stripped-down interiors that dominated the 2010s has been building for some time. Rooms that prioritized whiteness, clean geometry, and the elimination of texture began to feel, for many homeowners, more like an exercise in restraint than an expression of how people actually want to live.

“We are seeing a meaningful shift away from stark, sterile interiors toward rooms that feel intentional and grounded in character,” one prominent interior designer observed recently. She spent considerable time with reclaimed samples before concluding that the structural requirements of her great room called for something different. Douglas fir, a species long prized in Western construction for both its strength and its visual richness, offered qualities that felt more precisely suited to the space. Its grain patterns are deep and pronounced, running in long parallel lines that shift in tone depending on how they catch the light. Freshly milled, the wood carries a warmth that tends toward honey and amber, with occasional streaks of reddish brown that add complexity. Against pale plaster walls and the stone surfaces elsewhere in Whitaker’s home, those tones create a contrast that feels effortless rather than calculated.

“When I held the Douglas fir samples next to the walls in the house, it was almost immediately clear,” Whitaker says. “The grain was exactly what the room needed. It wasn’t too rustic and it wasn’t too refined. It felt like it belonged.”

The species also ages well. Over time, Douglas fir deepens in tone, moving from honey toward a richer amber and eventually toward the kind of burnished warmth that old timber buildings are known for. For a home designed to hold up as a gathering place for years of family and guests, that trajectory toward more character rather than less was a significant part of the appeal.

What Changed When the Beams Went In

Whitaker was present for the installation. She describes watching the room transform over the course of the day in terms that suggest the change was more significant than she had anticipated, even after considerable time spent planning and visualizing the result.

“The beams gave the room rhythm,” she says. “Before they were there, the ceiling just felt like empty space. Now your eye moves across the room naturally. It feels warm instead of cavernous.”

There is also a subtler effect at work. Timber beams change the acoustic character of a space in ways that most people feel before they are able to identify. A room with hard surfaces and no overhead elements tends to carry sound in ways that feel cold or clinical, and the introduction of wood, which absorbs rather than reflects, softens that quality noticeably. Rooms with exposed timber overhead often feel quieter and more intimate even when they are architecturally large.

The relationship between the wood and natural light surprised Whitaker most.

In a mountain home where the angle and quality of light shifts considerably across the course of a day, exposed timber overhead becomes something close to a sundial, registering the movement of the sun in ways that are subtle but cumulative. The long parallel lines of Douglas fir grain run across the surface of the beam the way contour lines run across a topographic map, and as the angle of light changes, different parts of those lines catch and reflect differently. Many approach their properties as places that will host decades of returns rather than residences in the conventional sense, and that orientation shapes the decisions they make about materials in ways that are distinct from how those decisions get made elsewhere.

It is a perspective that reflects something experienced woodworkers and architects have understood for a long time but that often gets lost in the short-term logic of most renovation decisions. Materials that age well are not just a practical advantage. They represent a different orientation toward time, one that anticipates the future rather than simply preserving the present.

“These beams will probably look even better twenty years from now,” Whitaker says. “The wood will have darkened a bit, the grain will be more pronounced, and the room will have that quality that old timber buildings have, where everything feels like it has been there forever. That’s what I want this house to become.”

The Room as It Is Now

“The beams are quiet,” Whitaker says. “But they’re doing a lot of work.”
